Night

Through the window, watching the crescent moon glowing a luminant red and hanging half way in the sky, he toyed with a star rock which lay in his palm. His memory flashed back to a night of last summer at Peru. Almost the same moon but not as red, he thought.

The only difference was Sabrina who was present and told him the story: choosing a night with a moon as they looked at, pointing this star rock to the moon and saying the charm which would bring anyone, whoever in his mind, to him immediately. But she didn’t teach him the charm; otherwise, he could bring her here, right now.

The archaeological work wasn’t very interesting there. He had to fight with the heat and sand, but his assistant Sabrina, who had black hair and pleasant attitude, compensated for the regret of staying there. Even though they didn’t develop an intimate relationship, she became his most important person there. He thought about proposing, but he learned that she would never leave her family, no matter how insignificantly they treated her.

The rock sparked once, he thought he was dreaming. And then, a second spark. This time, he was sure it was true. He felt the rock heat up, as if it was burned from inside, as its light increased in strength. He closed his eyes for he couldn’t endure the brightness and he was suddenly overwhelmed by a faint. When he finally recovered and opened his eyes, he was sitting in front of an exoteric altar, Sabrina stood right beside him and looked down at his seated form.

“You summoned me after all. I bet you do miss me.” He said in an emotional tone.

“I’m sorry. I don’t want to do this.” She said with remorse or excitment?

“What do you mean…” before he could finish his words, four people stepped forward, grabbed his hands and feet and tied him on a stone bed.

“What are you doing?” The rock slipped out of his hand when he struggled against their control.

He felt panic seeing dozens of people in white linen robe circling around him. Sabrina looked solemnly in her red robe and she picked up the rock. Torches in four corners shadowed their grim faces, something he believed was out of their characters for these people.

“What the hell are you tying me up for?” He despair arose when seeing Sabrina lay a dagger beside his ear

“You’re the most honorable sacrifice we have ever had. Luna, our goddess, will be very pleased with your intellectual and exotic style. You know, we used to sacrifice our men, who couldn’t get high education and tended to look much older than their real age. But you foreigners are different and Luna loves brilliant young man.”

“You’re insane.”

She sighed, “I’m sorry if you feel that way. But you should congratulate me because today is my wedding day. ”

“Who’s he? And why should I, after you did all this to me?”

“I know you love me, but we, the last remaining Incas, have to keep our blood pure, so Luna won’t ruin us which happened once before. Thanks for the love you kept for me which can secure my beauty and the prosperity of my next generation. And it’s not every man can keep it long as one year.” Sabrina’s voice revealed her vanity.

“How will you do to me, then?” He looked into her eyes searching out any clue.

“Well, it’s better you don’t know.” She unbuttoned his shirt gently with a fatal smile on her face.

A horrible scream pierced the night. Far above, Luna blinked.
